Meet the Therapist and Owner

CARMEN LYNN HODGES, Psy.D , LCADC

Dr. Carmen Lynn Hodges is a New Jersey Licensed Psychologist, and a New Jersey Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor with over 25 years of experience. She completed a Doctor of Clinical Psychology Degree at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where psychologists are trained in the American Psychological Association Accredited Program as practitioner scholars. And, as result of her training, she was encouraged to evaluate and assess the whole person, and to work closely with the patient’s referring providers, school officials, and extended community for optimal treatment outcomes.

Her first supervised clinical experience was working as an intern at Jersey Battered Women’s Services. Since that time, she has worked in various settings, and with people of all ages.

She has worked in two psychiatric screening centers, a school base program, in various community mental health agencies, drug treatment agencies, community based halfway houses, prisons, a military base, a private practice, skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers, and social service agencies including disability advocacy programs, and an affordable housing home ownership program.

Additionally, as an Educational Opportunity Fund Graduate from Drew University, she was privileged to work as a Graduate Assistant in the Educational Opportunity Program and in the Counseling Center at Rider University and reciprocate what she gained as a student at Drew. Moreover, while at Rider, she was trained in substance abuse assessment tools under the supervision of the Substance Abuse Coordinator, and she completed substance abuse evaluations on students who were referred for assessments and proactive substance abuse education. She also, presented trainings to Residential Life Staff on abusive relationships among college students.

Recently, as a Medical Consultant Psychologist at Disability Determination Services, she reviewed the documentation submitted in Claimant files to determine their eligibility for Title II /Title XVI benefits, and applicability to the Social Security Disability Policy for the citizens of New Jersey.

Dr. Hodges previously worked at UMDNJ/ Rutgers University Correctional Health care located at AlbertC. Wagner Youth Corrections, where she provided group and individual counseling/psychotherapy to incarcerated inmates in the NJ Department of Corrections system. She completed specialized evaluations (e.g. Suicide, SVP, MnSOST-R, STATIC-99, disciplinary evaluations). She also completed Pre-parole evaluations.

While at Albert C. Wagner, her participation in the CWA Local 1040 Labor negotiation process gave her a unique perspective from the position of the employee, Labor Relations, and Management. She plans to utilize this knowledge at Champion Psychological Services, LLC byhelping her patients in their self-advocacy efforts in the workplace.

At Riverside Clinics, she provided dual diagnosis individual psychotherapy, and group counseling to probationers in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with the primary treatment goal of reducing the possibility of recidivism and relapse to alcohol and illicit substance use via culturally sensitive treatment program specifically designed for African-American and Hispanic probationers in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Similarly, at Livengrin she provided she provided dual diagnosis individual psychotherapy, and group counseling. She also worked in the admissions and completed intake assessments and recommended Level of Care placements to insurance providers as per the ASAM criteria and other related factors (e.g. CIWA and CINA).

As a Psychologist at Joint Base McGuire Dix –Lakehurst, she provided psychological services to active duty service members in various states of deployment for government contracting company. This included completing Medical Board Evaluations, Flying Evaluations, and Specialized Risk Assessments. She also received specialized training in emergency preparedness, Risk Assessments, Military Customs and Courtesies.

She also managed an affordable housing program at Volunteers of America Delaware Valley which first included identifying office space, then identifying and pre-qualifying buyers for NJHMFA (and overcoming credit challenges). She supervised the housing rehabilitation program from the selection of the city of Trenton buildings to be rehabilitated, to sweat equity, the homeowner trainings, to the homeowner move-in process.

On a personal note, Dr. Hodges is a caregiver for a family member with a developmental disability. She has served on the Trustee board of Enable formerly known as United Cerebral Palsy. And she briefly served as the Director of Safety and Service Quality at Enable ensuring the competent and quality care of the citizens of NJ.

Dr Hodges supports the ADA and advocates for people with visible and hidden disabilities.She has served as a coordinator for two State of New Jersey Disability oriented self-advocacy programs: Project Take Charge, and Partners in Policy Making.

Based on the knowledge and skills Dr. Hodges has gained during her educational pursuits, along with her personal, and professional experiences, Dr. Hodges believes that people are greater than the sum of their current circumstances.

And that despite their history, Dr Hodges believes people can overcome unfavorable situations. And people can be resilient in a community that is theirs by nature, or by nurture. She enjoys collaborating with her patients in group and individual sessions. She takes pleasure in facilitating groups that provoke members to become aware of their inner strengths.
