Abuse of Prescription Drugs

In 2020estimated 18 million people ages 12 and older have abused prescription drugs.This has serious implications becauseabusing drugs impacts one ability to maintain self-control, and to make good decisions.Additionally, the desire to continue abusing drugs is ongoing.The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports there are 3 types of drugs that are commonly abused:

1.Opioids -these medicines manage pain well, when taken as prescribed. But they can lead to drug abuse, dependence,and addiction.

2.Central Nervous System Depressants

Benzodiazepines -these treat anxiety and sleep.

Barbiturates -these are used to treat seizures.

3.Stimulants -these medications are used to increase alertness, energy,and attention.Doctors have used these medications to treat obesity, asthma, ADD, ADHD, depression,and narcolepsy.
